Welcome to Altadena

A peaceful community with beautiful mountain views

Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains is the peaceful community of Altadena. The people here are friendly, the shops and restaurants are small and locally owned, and the views are astounding. Sunset here is especially gorgeous. If you’re looking for a home full of abundant nature but still close to metropolitan hubs, then Altadena is for you. Houses for sale in Altadena are spacious, beautifully designed and surrounded by mountain views.

Altadena began just after California became a state, when pioneers built water systems from the area to feed nearby towns. They soon found that grapes and citrus grew well in the hills, and Altadena’s harvests helped nearby Pasadena become the largest producer of wine leading up to (and during) Prohibition. They’ve resisted rules and annexation by other towns, and that “do what you want” spirit is still a fundamental part of the community.

Like Pasadena, Altadena saw many affluent folks from the East Coast take up residence here. The sprawl of Altadena has lent itself to large mansions and estates, as well as single-family craftsman homes.

People & Lifestyle

Altadena is a rural community that caters to those who love the outdoors. With beautiful views of the mountains, easy access to the wilderness, and tree-lined streets, it’s easy to feel more secluded than the town actually is.

Altadena is a great place for families, and its proximity to Pasadena offers access to schooling, arts, and culture, as well as the many incredible companies that boost the job market there. This is the perfect place to live if you want to feel far away but want to have only a short drive bring you to the heart of the city.

Dining, Shopping & Entertainment

Altadena is all about community, and that shines through in the established local shops. Each locally-owned business comes to the table with a unique flair and desire for connection.

Open Road Bicycle Shop is a charming, local spot where cyclists can come for an expert opinion with a hometown touch. Wellema Hat Co brings old-world craftsmanship to the area with bespoke, hand-sewn hats. If you’re looking for a wider variety of goods but still want them locally produced and certified fair trade, Hoopla! is the boutique for you.

El Patron is a cozy neighborhood spot that serves authentic Mexican fare. There might not be many local coffee shops within the Altadena boundaries, but The Little Red Hen Coffee Shop more than makes up for that with its caffeine and breakfast offerings. Altadena Ale & Wine House is a family-owned establishment that prides itself on its beer selection and encourages patrons to have deep, intellectual conversations over a pint.

Things to Do

From opulent beauty to dazzling holiday displays, Altadena surprises many with the things it has to offer. Residents here enjoy a wide range of activities that belies its rural feel.

Every Christmas, residents can drive down Santa Rosa Avenue, better known as Christmas Tree Lane. This jaw-dropping corridor is the oldest large-scale Christmas lighting display in the world. The Altadena Library is a wonderful place to find community events, with book clubs, speaker series, and even a dinner party, catered by local restaurants, designed to help the community connect.

Visit the self-proclaimed “Hoppiest Place on Earth” with a ticket to The Bunny Museum. This intriguing museum explores the way bunnies have been portrayed through culture, art, and advertising throughout the centuries. Altadena also features beautiful opportunities to get outdoors.
